Breathwork exercises, also known as pranayama, are an ancient practice that have been used for centuries to cultivate physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. By focusing on the breath, practitioners can quiet the mind, reduce stress, and connect with their higher selves.

For women between the ages of 35-50, who may be juggling the demands of work, family, and other responsibilities, breath work exercises can be an invaluable tool for finding inner peace and a sense of purpose. By taking a few minutes each day to focus on the breath, you can tap into a deeper, more intuitive part of yourself and connect with your higher self.

Higher Self

So, what is the higher self and how can breathwork exercises help you connect with it? The higher self is often described as the true, divine nature of a person. It is the part of us that is connected to a higher power or source, and is often thought of as the source of our wisdom and guidance.

By focusing on the breath, practitioners can quiet the mind, which makes it easier to let go of ego and connect with the higher self. The breath is also a powerful tool for cultivating mindfulness, which is the practice of being present in the moment and paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Four Square Breathing

There are many different breath work exercises that you can try to connect with your higher self. One of the simplest and most effective is called “four square breathing.”

  • To practice four square breathing, start by finding a comfortable seated position and closing your eyes. Take a deep breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. As you exhale, mentally say the word “calm.”
  • Next, take another deep breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. As you exhale, mentally say the word “centered.”
  • Then, take another deep breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. As you exhale, mentally say the word “expanded.”
  • Finally, take another deep breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. As you exhale, mentally say the word “connected.”

After completing the four breaths, take a moment to notice any changes in your body or mind. You may feel more relaxed, centered, or connected to something greater than yourself. If you have trouble focusing on the breath or your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to the breath.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Another breathwork exercise that can help you connect with your higher self is called “alternate nostril breathing.”

To practice this technique, start by finding a comfortable seated position and closing your eyes.

Place your right hand on your nose, and use your thumb to close your right nostril.

Take a deep breath in through your left nostril, and then use your ring finger to close your left nostril.

Exhale through your right nostril, and then take another deep breath in through your right nostril.

Close your right nostril with your thumb, and exhale through your left nostril.

Continue this pattern, alternating between your left and right nostrils, for 5-10 minutes. As you practice, focus on the breath and try to quiet the mind. If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to the breath.

Breathwork exercises can be done anytime, anywhere, and do not require any special equipment. All you need is a comfortable place to sit or lie down, and a willingness to focus on the breath. By incorporating breath work exercises into your daily routine, you can cultivate a sense of inner peace and connect with your higher self.
